Barrett backs offshore generation

8 January 2010

John Barrett, MP for Edinburgh West, today welcomed the approval of plans to develop the Firth of Forth’s offshore energy potential.

Energy consortium SeaGreen Wind Energy Ltd have been given the go-ahead to develop an offshore wind farm in the Forth following approval from the Crown Estate.

Commenting, John Barrett said:

“As a fervent supporter of renewable energy I am very positive about this announcement today. This is good news for the environment and the economy.

“Scotland is blessed with the some of the most favourable conditions for renewable energy generation in the world, and to be able to harness the Forth’s natural potential is another step forward, as our country strives to enhance its green output.”

Mike Crockart, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Edinburgh West at the forthcoming General Election, added:

“Any opportunity to develop green energy instead of nuclear and fossil fuels is welcome.

“Offshore energy production is a safe, clean alternative to nuclear and fossil burning fuels and I see no reason why Scotland should not be at the forefront of its development.

“As a Liberal Democrat, I am committed to ensuring that renewable sources become the main component of energy generation across the UK.”
