Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott has joined Edinburgh West MP John Barrett and PPC Mike Crockart to mark Human Rights Day by signing this year’s Amnesty petition to protect freedom of expression.
The Liberal Democrats signed a tear off slip, which then formed part of a mosaic of a stylised image of Dr Sen, the subject of this year’s petition.
Commenting, Mr Scott said:
“I was proud to mark Human Rights Day with Amnesty International.
“Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right and it is right that we show solidarity with those who are persecuted for peacefully expressing their views.
Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West John Barrett added:
“I am pleased to have honoured Human Rights Day today with Amnesty International.
“As a long-time member of the organisation, I am regularly made aware of the persecution taking place across the world.
“Amnesty International plays an invaluable role in both raising our awareness of this persecution and working to put an end to discrimination and injustice. That is why days like today are so important.
Liberal Democrat PPC for Edinburgh West Mike Crockart said:
“In marking Human Rights day, it has been great to witness the work that Amnesty International has been doing to raise people’s awareness of cases of injustice like Doctor Sen’s.
“Standing as the candidate to succeed John Barrett I will do everything I can to continue campaigning to preserve the rights of the individual, both at home and abroad.”
