Local Lib Dems delighted at council Newbridge decision

26 November 2008

Margaret Smith MSP has welcomed Edinburgh Council’s unanimous decision to support an outline planning application for the development of housing and community facilities in Newbridge. Margaret and her Lib Dem colleagues John Barrett MP and Cllr George Grubb have been working with all other local elected representatives, the Community Council, local residents, land owners and others as part of the Newbridge Regeneration Working Group.

Council officials raised concerns about noise problems due to proximity to the airport and the Royalite plastics factory. However, BAA figures show that of all noise complaints received since January 2006, less than 5% were from Newbridge residents. The Council withdrew their earlier objections on the grounds of transport and education.

Margaret commented: “This has been a genuine community based campaign and I was privileged to be able to give evidence in support of the Group to the Planning Committee.

“There are still challenges ahead but I am determined to work hard to make sure that the community benefits - a care home ; a community centre ; affordable housing and a future for Hillwood Primary School are secured through the planning conditions.”

John Barrett added: “I’m delighted the Council have supported the application for just under 500 homes on this brownfield site. I will continue to work with the village stakeholders to deliver regeneration and a brighter future for Newbridge and Ratho Station.”
