Environment leader Councillor Robert Aldridge has succeeded in extending the collection of garden waste all year round. In previous years, collection would be suspended over the winter months but now residents using brown bins will have them uplifted over the festive period. Collection calendars have been sent out to residents who began receiving the service at the start of November 2008. An additional 10,000 homes have now been equipped to commence garden waste kerbside collection mean that 120,000 households are now very green gardeners! Alongside this extended service, Edinburgh West constituents can new receive text alerts to remind them it's bin day. In partnership with the independent website www.GreenBoxDay.co.uk this scheme is the first of its kind in Scotland. Commenting, Cllr Aldridge said: “It is great that, this year, Edinburgh is on target to reach its 30% recycling target for 2008-09. Any scheme that encourages recycling can only be a positive step.”
