Following pressure from the Liberal Democrats and campaigns throughout the country, the Government has been forced into a major u-turn and stopped the tendering process which could have resulted in the Post Office Account Card contract being removed from the Post Office. This account is used by millions of customers throughout the country and is especially needed by the elderly, disabled and those on benefits. Its removal would have resulted in a loss of business which was predicted to result in the closure of a further 3,000 Post Offices. Following the recent closure programme which resulted in 2,500 branch closures, this would have undermined what was left of the network.
